Ben Wilkinson, our Leicester Tax Manager, is up for another East Midlands Chamber Generation Next Customer Service Award! After winning this award last year, Ben has been nominated again this year, and he is now a finalist once again.

With almost eight years at MHA, Ben joined us as a trainee after completing a degree at the University of Nottingham and has since been promoted all the way up to Manager.

Initially studying Geography at University, Ben decided to pursue a career in Tax and has since passed his ATT and CTA exams at Kaplan. He qualified in January 2022.

Having won the Generation Next Customer Service award in 2022 and being a finalist again this year, how does it feel?

It is a brilliant feeling to be put forward as a finalist again, both personally and for my team. It is great recognition for the outstanding work we put in to provide a top-quality service to our clients. I am proud to be selected and I always include my team in that as I couldn’t do my role without everyone in my team working to the best of their ability, as a team and learning from each other.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in Tax?

Absolutely give it a go. It is a people service career, so I would say put effort into getting to know people; learn, understand, and build a relationship with your clients and your team around you. Also know that this won’t happen overnight. It is a long-term process to work towards, but it is so rewarding long-term. Soak up all the knowledge and experience you can from clients and colleagues and have a go at using that learning practically.

Tax is an ever-changing industry with lots to learn and adapt to all the time, so every day you face different tasks and challenges, which makes it interesting. It also means that nobody can know everything about tax, it is so vast, but that means the experience of everyone in your team around you is invaluable. Everybody’s strengths combine to provide a great support network.

How are you feeling about the big night?

It's a celebratory night for everyone involved as everyone deserves the recognition they get, whether they are a finalist or an award winner. There will be a lot of great, talented, and hardworking people there and I am really looking forward to meeting them and celebrating them.

We wish Ben and the other finalists the best of luck for the evening.
