Save the Children UK (STC UK) has announced a significant restructuring plan aimed at improving its financial stability and increasing its impact.
As part of its “refocus for impact” strategy, the charity is considering 197 staff redundancies, a move expected to save £6m annually.
Key elements of the charity’s restructuring plan include:
- Financial Challenges: STC UK faces rising costs, with wages increasing by £7m over four years due to inflation. The charity employed 721 people in 2023, 41 more than in 2022.
- Consultation: The charity will consult staff on proposed changes and offer voluntary redundancy to minimise compulsory layoffs.
- Supporting children in crisis globally.
- Improving health and education.
- Tackling climate change and inequality.
- Expanding support for children in the UK.
- Financial Position: In 2023, STC UK reported a total income of £296m and expenditure of £295m, maintaining financial balance. The last time it reported a deficit was in 2019.

Children in the UK and around the world have escalating needs arising from poverty, conflict and climate change … This reorganisation will lead to a sharper focus on those needs; and shift scarce resources from HQ activities to address challenges on the ground.”
This restructuring reflects broader financial pressures faced by many charities due to rising costs and economic uncertainty. For not-for-profit entities, it highlights the importance of:
- Regular financial reviews to ensure long-term sustainability.
- Strategic realignments to maximise impact.
- Transparent communication with staff and stakeholders during organisational changes.
Charities undergoing financial challenges may consider similar measures to balance operational costs while maintaining their mission effectiveness.
