Sam Holmes, an Assistant Manager in MHA’s Audit team in Preston, shares his career story from joining as an AAT apprentice to managing high-profile audits. In this Q&A, Sam reflects on the opportunities he’s been given, the support he’s received, and his advice for those considering a similar path. His story demonstrates MHA’s supportive culture and how opportunities for growth have enabled him to advance his career.
Can you tell us about your career journey at MHA so far?
"I joined MHA in August 2018 as an AAT apprentice, straight out of Cardinal Newman College in Preston. At the time, I was just 17, which made my start quite unique. I began my journey at the Southport office, focusing on accounts preparation work for smaller clients."
I subsequently moved to the Preston office, which gave me the opportunity focus more on audits. I completed my AAT qualification in early 2020 and started my ACA studies in January 2021. By October 2023, I was ACA-qualified, promoted to Assistant Manager and started to manage my own audits straight away. It’s quite unusual to progress this quickly from being newly qualified and to then managing audits.
The early start in my career has given me more years of experience than most people at my age and qualification level, which has been a massive benefit as I’ve taken on more managerial responsibilities much sooner in my career.
What opportunities have you had to grow your skills at MHA?
The variety of work has been incredible. I’ve managed audits for different clients and whilst it’s all audit work the range of clients, which includes academy schools and pension schemes, has really helped me build my knowledge and a broader skill set.
One standout opportunity was managing a large motor dealership audit shortly after becoming an Assistant Manager. It was a huge client with different 11 companies, eight of which are classified as large. The partner supported me throughout the process but also showed their faith in me by giving me such a big opportunity. I was incredibly proud to deliver a good result and receive positive client feedback. Experiences like this have really pushed me to grow.
At MHA, the opportunities are there for anyone willing to step up and shine. The trust and support I’ve received have allowed me to grow and deliver results I’m proud of.
What kind of support have you received to help you progress?
MHA has been incredibly supportive throughout my journey. During my studies, my line manager ensured my workload was manageable and provided the flexibility I needed, especially during exam periods.
As I transitioned to a more managerial role, the support has continued with dedicated training like the Modern Manager course. The course, which is spread over four days,
covered everything from effective delegation to communication styles. It’s helped me to think about the work I need to delegate and how I better coach my team. For example, by asking more open-ended questions and creating the space for them to think. It’s helping me move from teaching and telling to coaching which ultimately ensures my team develop quicker.
What’s it like to be part of a growing company like MHA? It’s exciting! The firm’s growth creates opportunities for progression that you might not find elsewhere. For instance, when I became an Assistant Manager, I wasn’t the only one—there were several promotions at the same time.
Because the firm is expanding, there’s room to take on more responsibility without waiting for someone else to step aside or move on. It’s a fast-paced environment where you can see your career advancing alongside the firm’s success.
How would you describe the culture at MHA?
Even though it is fast-paced, the culture here is friendly and supportive. Everyone is approachable, from juniors to partners, and there’s a real sense of teamwork.
Outside of work, the friendships you build are just as important. I’ve developed strong connections with colleagues, and we often organise social events. These supportive relationships make it easier to collaborate and support each other during the busy times in the office.
How have the opportunities at MHA impacted you personally as well as professionally?
The opportunities I’ve had at MHA have been life-changing in many ways. Starting my career early as an apprentice allowed me to progress quickly, and by 21, I was able to buy my first house. That’s something I’m incredibly proud of and might not have been possible if I had taken a different path. Professionally, the trust and responsibility I’ve been given have helped me grow into roles I never imagined I’d be in at this stage of my career.
What advice would you give to someone starting their career at MHA? Speak up. If there’s an area you’re interested in, let someone know. At MHA, there are always opportunities you just need to let people know what you’re interested in. Also, don’t hesitate to ask for help if you’re struggling. Communication is key, and no one expects you to have all the answers.
The door is open—you just need to step through it.
