FemTech is a sector that is growing, and fast. As of September 2022, the total funding to the FemTech sector in the UK was over $740 million, according to Deep Knowledge Group.

This makes it an incredibly interesting sector to keep an eye on, especially as tech begins to help women navigate areas of their health and well-being that were previously ignored.

What is FemTech?

FemTech, short for “female technology,” refers to products, services, and apps designed specifically for women’s health and wellness. Historically, many aspects of women’s health have been overlooked or sidelined in the broader healthcare landscape. FemTech is changing that by providing tailored solutions in key areas.

Key Areas in FemTech

  1. Menstrual Health Period tracking apps, devices, sustainable menstrual products, and smart devices for pain management.
  2. Pregnancy Planning At-home hormone testing, fertility trackers, and products to support the body’s nutritional needs during pregnancy.
  3. Sexual Health More accessible STD testing, libido tracking, and tech-driven contraceptive options.
  4. Menopause Support Devices for symptom management, symptom trackers, and online therapy to address emotional aspects.
  5. Mental Well-being Therapists specifically for women, mental health apps, and supplements designed to support emotional health.

The Road Ahead: FemTech in 2025

2025 is likely to be a major year for FemTech, thanks to a number of changes which are set to bring a wave of fresh investment to the industry. These include:

  • £6.1 billion of funding for research in sectors like medical science, announced in the UK government’s budget.
  • The creation of pension ‘megafunds’ designed to boost investment in high-growth industries like FemTech.
  • A new industrial strategy prioritizing industries with untapped potential, a category where FemTech fits squarely.

With these developments, FemTech is poised to attract more attention and investment than ever before.

AI is also accelerating technological advances, particularly in areas like breast cancer treatment, IVF embryo assessment, and maternal healthcare. Expect significant progress across these areas, as well as in the wearables sector, which is experiencing rapid growth and proving particularly popular among women. As the market expands, major manufacturers are working to enhance the functionality of their devices for women’s health, often through partnerships and acquisitions of specialist companies in women’s health and menopause tech. Expect to see even more of this in 2025 as women’s health takes center stage in wearable product development.

FemTech is more than just a trend—it’s a crucial step forward in making women’s health a priority in the tech and healthcare industries. As the sector continues to grow, it’s poised to reshape the landscape of women’s healthcare, from menstrual health to menopause and everything in between. With significant investment and innovation on the horizon, FemTech is set to play a central role in empowering women to take control of their health in ways that were never before possible.
